I recently tried to find a tool to help me create my family tree. After asking lots of people I found one which I thought was really good. Since then, I have learned about Geni. It is EXCELLENT!

It is visual. The detail that can be added is great. For example, the creator or family members can add: –

DoB,
place of birth,
date of death,
place of death,
place of burial,
if they are the only child,
if not, in which order they were born e.g. first born,
relationships in terms of first husband, whether they are still together or not etc.

You can add photos for each family member to.

It’s so easy to use. You can even tick a box to get alerts to remind all family members about memorable dates, such as, birthdays, anniversaries etc.

So here’s what they’ve written about themselves

About Geni

Geni is a tool for understanding and staying in touch with your family.

Geni lets you create a family tree through our fun simple interface. You can expand your tree by adding relatives’ email addresses. They will be invited to join your tree and can add other relatives. Your tree will continue to grow as relatives invite other relatives.

Each family member has a profile which can be viewed by clicking their name in the tree. This helps family members learn more about each other and stay in touch. Family members can also share photos and work together to build profiles for common ancestors.

Geni is private. Only the people in your family tree can log in to your tree and your profile. Geni will not share your personal information with third parties. We will not sell your email address or spam you. Users control which communications they would like to receive from us.

Geni was founded by former executives and early employees of PayPal, Yahoo! Groups, Ebay, and Tribe. It is backed by venture capital firms Founders Fund and Charles River Ventures.

Glad that you’re using Geni.com. So valuable for us (of course) and our future generations.

I’d rather recommend itsourtree.com. I like it much better than geni. Quite the same idea but some cool features and nice looks.

Greetings,

Helen

Dear Suraj,

Yes creating a family tree like this is an excellent resource, especially when family members are scattered all over the place.

It helps those who haven’t met, connect in a way too 🙂

Dear Helen,

Thanks for recommending an alternative website. I’ve accepted your comment so that anyone reading this blog have a choice of blogs, not just recommended by me.

On a personal note, although it looks quite cool, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the example pictures in the top right corner. There are quite a few with one, what seems to me like a tokenistic image, of a non Caucasian face.

I’m sure it wasn’t intentional and I’m not sure how many races should be represented through these example images on the home page. However, seeing it the way it is, didn’t sit too well with me.

Thanks for the recommendation anyway
Heena 🙂
