I can’t believe how much this lady did to help save the lives of persecuted children, yet so many people don’t know about her. This includes me; until recently I had no knowledge of her!
So who is she?
On Wiki it says that she was a Polish Catholic social worker. She served in the Polish Underground and the Żegota resistance organization in German-occupied Warsaw during World War II. She helped other Żegota members and they saved 2,500 Jewish children! They smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto by giving them false documents, and sheltering them in homes outside the Ghetto.
How did people find out about her work? Her story…
This came about in the United States when students in Kansas found out about what she did and they described in a magazine. They also created a play called Life in a Jar.
On April 19, 2009, The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler, a Hallmark Hall of Fame production written and directed by John Kent Harrison and starring Anna Paquin in the title role, was broadcast by CBS.
This obviously made a larger group of people aware of her work. 🙂
The title Life in a Jar is explained in this brief video:-
Here’s another video that explains what happened to her when she got caught by the Gestapo & what happened to the many children who were saved.
Click here to read the article that appeared in the Telegraph after she passed away.
Lastly for those of you who aren’t sure if it’s a hoax story. Here’s what Snopes has to say about that.
